Increase viewer engagement and revenue growth with Dolby OptiView Ads

Monetizing live sports means balancing revenue, fan engagement, and operational simplicity. Dolby OptiView Ads help companies do all three: grow revenue with non-linear formats, keep fans in the action, and deploy faster with AI-powered tools.

For sports service providers and rights holders, effective monetization is more than serving ads. It’s vital to balance revenue growth, audience engagement, and operational simplicity. In this blog post, we’ll explore how Dolby OptiView Ads enable companies to:

  • Grow advertising revenue with non-linear ad formats and monetization opportunities designed for live sports.
  • Keep fans engaged with ad experiences that don’t take viewers out of the live experience and keep viewers connected to the action.
  • Deploy faster with less effort through seamless integration, support for any player, and AI-powered developer tools.

Why ad experience matters in live sports

Live sports audiences are deeply engaged in every moment, every play, and every shift in momentum. That high attention is what makes live sports inventory so valuable to advertisers, but it’s also what makes the viewing experience worth protecting.

A great monetization strategy works with that fan engagement, not against it. When ads are timed well, formatted thoughtfully, and delivered without taking over the full screen at a critical moment, viewers stay in the experience and advertisers reach an audience that’s actually paying attention. Smart ad delivery grows your revenue precisely because it respects what brought the audience there in the first place. One can even increase their ad opportunities by creating more inventory without interrupting the game.

Monetize more without changing what works

A new ad strategy is more achievable if it’s simple to deploy. With Dolby OptiView Ads, you can level up your monetization performance without disrupting the current streaming workflow. If your streaming stack is already running, Dolby OptiView Ads plugs right in. No changes to your origin, CDN, or video player required. For supported players, integration requires as few as five lines of code. Ad breaks can be scheduled or detected automatically, ads are requested from your ad server, and the Dolby OptiView Ads inserts them into playback seamlessly.

Dolby OptiView Ads SDK works alongside your existing video player. A lightweight adapter acts as a translation layer, allowing the SDK to understand player events and orchestrate the player during ad breaks. Ads are orchestrated with the SDK, and playback is handed back to your video player as soon as the break ends, creating a smooth experience for viewers with minimal integration effort.

AI-native developer experience

To make the integration process even smoother, we have AI enablement built into Dolby OptiView Ads. Run a single NPM command, and turn your AI assistant into a Dolby OptiView Ads expert. Generate integration code faster, get instant answers about APIs and configuration, and resolve playback issues directly from diagnostic reports, all without digging through documentation or opening a support ticket. Everything runs locally in your development environment, keeping your code, data, and debugging workflows under your control.

The SDK also includes a player adapter skill. If you need to support a player without a prebuilt adapter, your AI assistant can generate and validate one, helping you integrate faster and expand player compatibility with less engineering effort.

Ad experiences built for live sports

Once monetization integration is in place, the next thing is deciding how and when ads appear. Live sports viewers have zero tolerance for ad experiences that pull them away from the action at the wrong moment. Dolby OptiView Ads supports a range of ad experiences that give you the flexibility to monetize at a better time.

  • Pre-roll serves ads before the stream begins, capturing attention while viewers are settling in.
  • Delayed pre-roll takes a different approach: it lets the viewer enter the live stream immediately and become engaged, then triggers an ad for that user after a configurable delay (30 seconds, one minute, or longer) resulting in stickier sessions.
  • Mid-roll ads are inserted at natural breaks in the broadcast, either detected automatically from the stream or scheduled through the dashboard and are applied for all viewers.
  • Pause ads activate when a viewer pauses playback and can be served as a static image or a video, turning idle moments into incremental revenue without interrupting the viewing experience.
  • On-demand ad insertion allows operators to trigger ads manually during a live stream directly from the control dashboard.

Timing is only part of the experience. Dolby OptiView Ads also offers viewer-friendly formats designed for live sports. Double box, L-shape, and overlay formats keep the action visible while ads are running, helping you monetize without completely pulling viewers away from the game. This allows you to create ad experiences that maximize revenue while keeping fans connected to the action.

Ad operations made simple

Behind these viewer-friendly ad experiences are two flexible deployment options, both managed through a single, intuitive dashboard. For automated workflows, the platform detects ad break signals (SCTE-35 markers) within the stream and inserts ads based on predefined rules. For greater control, operators can trigger ad breaks on demand, determining exactly when the ads are delivered.

Whether ad breaks are triggered automatically or initiated manually, teams benefit from a centralized view of active campaigns, scheduled inventory, and delivery history, enabling efficient ad operations.

Comprehensive support across your ad workflow

Beyond monetization formats and developer tooling, Dolby OptiView Ads provides the flexibility to support a wide range of streaming workflows, players, insertion methods, and deployment models. Whether you’re monetizing live events, DVR streams, the platform provides the flexibility to fit into your existing workflow. Everything below works out of the box:

  • Ad experiences: Pre-roll, delayed pre-roll, mid-roll, and pause ads (image or video)
  • Non-linear and TV formats: Double box, L-shape, L-shape content, overlay, and full-screen, designed to keep live action visible during breaks
  • Break scheduling: SCTE-35, EXT-X-CUE, EXT-X-DATERANGE, API, or dashboard
  • Ad controls: Countdown timers, ad pod management, skippable ads, snapback
  • Players: HLS.js, Shaka, Dolby OptiView Player (previously known as THEOplayer), Media3/ExoPlayer, AVPlayer, plus any player via adapter
  • Streaming: HLS, MPEG-DASH, HESP across live, DVR, and VOD (coming soon)
